How to Clean Your Microfiber Couch with Household Products So It Feels Good as New

Before you put anything on microfiber, find the care label. It is usually under a cushion or on the bottom of the couch. That little letter matters more than any cleaning trick on the internet.

Read the cleaning code

• W: Use a water-based upholstery cleaner.
• S: Use a water-free solvent cleaner made for upholstery.
• W-S: Either water-based or solvent-based upholstery cleaner may be used.
• X: Vacuum only. Leave deeper cleaning to a professional.

If the label is missing or unclear, contact the manufacturer or an upholstery cleaner. Guessing can leave rings, discoloration, or damaged fabric.

1. Vacuum first

Remove cushions if possible and vacuum seams, creases, and the full surface. Getting crumbs and grit out first keeps them from turning into muddy little problems once moisture is involved.

2. Choose the right cleaner

For a W couch, use a small amount of clear dish soap diluted in water or a water-based upholstery product. For an S couch, use a manufacturer-approved solvent upholstery cleaner. Rubbing alcohol is commonly used on some solvent-safe microfiber, but the care label and manufacturer instructions still win.

3. Spot-test

Test the cleaner on a hidden area with a white cloth. Let it dry completely and check for color transfer, rings, texture changes, or fading before continuing.

4. Work lightly

Use as little liquid as possible. Clean small sections with a white microfiber cloth and avoid soaking the cushion. Blot stains instead of scrubbing them deeper into the fabric.

5. Let it dry

Allow the couch to air-dry fully. Keep direct heat away from the fabric. Once dry, a clean, soft-bristled brush can help restore the microfiber's texture.

When to call a professional

Strong odors, large stains, unknown cleaning codes, delicate trim, or previous water rings are good reasons to stop. A professional cleaning costs less than replacing a couch that was damaged by the wrong method.
